Do you browse eBay at all? Do you sell items on eBay? I typically only looked at eBay whenever I was in need (or great desire) of something specific. Apparently, I felt I was in great desire of a new pipe back in June. I already mentioned The Londoner I picked up from eBay. Today, I’ll confess a little more of my P.A.D. (pipe acquisition disorder) and share two more of my eBay finds.
When I first started smoking pipes in the fall of 2013, I began with a corn cob pipe. Hey, don’t knock it till you try it. Missouri Meerschaum makes great corn cobs. The first briars I bought were antique store finds for anywhere between $7 and $10. I believe all two or three of those were Dr. Grabows.
Dr. Grabow is an American pipe brand with an interesting history. While I gave my antique finds away back in that first year of collecting, I never forgot those Dr. Grabow pipes. Then, in June, I discovered eBay and found Dr. Grabow again. Since June is the month for Father’s Day, I was able to sweet talk my mother into a Father’s Day pipe (or two). Lo, and behold, I won a Dr. Grabow Golden Duke.
I like my new model for several reasons. First, it is an American pipe, and in my quest to own a pipe from different countries all over the world, it fits the bill of not being Italian. Or English. Secondly, it’s bent, and all my other Dr. Grabow pipes were straight. Third, it’s a bent bulldog shape. After ogling hundreds (if not thousands, honestly) of pipe shapes over the course of past three years, I discovered I really liked the bulldog shape. Lastly, the price was tough to beat: $16 plus $2.25 shipping. That’s a nice pipe for less than $20! Score.
The second Father’s Day eBay pipe I received from my mother was my German pipe. Babione is a German name, I’m evidently of German descent, and therefore I had been wanting a German-made pipe for some time. Along came my Vauen.
I had always pronounced the brand “Vonn”, but it’s actually pronounced “pfau-en”. When I saw the bent dublin shape with the p-lip, I was hooked. I watched it for a few days and saw that, along with the Dr. Grabow, I could get this one rather inexpensively, too. Sure enough, $16 plus $2.25 shipping was the final price. That’s two pipes for less than $37! Double score.
This particular Vauen is a Dr. Perl model. Kinda fun that I got a Dr. Grabow (sounds more German than American) and a Dr. Perl (sounds more American than German) in the same box. Scored my American and German pipes at the same time. Reminds me of the world a capella championships between the Barden Bellas and Das Sound Machine, the most significant conflict between America and Germany in history. Or not. There’s really no rivalry between these two pipes; I like them both equally.
