You Think I Care for You So Little

Christ is everywhere. The Father paints pictures of His Son in more places than you and I realize, and it’s always fun to find them. And I love finding them in Doctor Who.

The above video clip is from Season 8 Episode 11: “Dark Water”. In it, and I’m about to spoil some things for those who haven’t seen it, Clara’s (the Doctor’s companion) boyfriend dies. She is obviously distraught about this and approaches the Doctor to do something about it. The clip at the end of the post is of her “betrayal” of the Doctor that is mentioned in the above clip. (No, I couldn’t find a clip that had the whole scene together, and I don’t currently have the know-how to make a clip myself.)

Spoilers!

So, Clara threatens the Doctor with the only existing keys to his TARDIS. Every time he says no to helping her, she throws a key away. She ends up throwing away all the keys and breaks down. The Doctor reveals that this has only been a dream state, and that she hasn’t, after all, thrown away the keys. She’s humiliated and upset. She asks what they’re to do next, and the Doctor replies, “Go to hell.” She obviously thinks he’s telling her off and starts to walk away. He stops her leaving by saying that she asked what they were going to do, and he was telling her that they were going to go to hell or wherever her boyfriend might be. He was telling her that he was going to help her. Clara asks the Doctor why he would still help her after she betrayed him, and he responds with, “Do you think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?”

Do You Think I Care for You So Little?

How often do we treat the Lord like that? How often do we think that He cares so little about us, that He wants nothing to do with us after we’ve messed up? I know I’m guilty of that a lot of times. I falter, I choose my own life over His, and then I have a hard time going back to Him. Why? Because I expect Him to tell me to go to hell. But that’s a deception of the Enemy. God never says, “Go to hell.” He says, “Come unto Me.” He says, “Deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Me.” He never leaves us nor forsakes us; He waits for us to turn back to Him. He is more patient than we will ever know.

In essence, because of His eternal purpose, God says to us, “Do you think I care so little for you that betraying Me would make a difference?” He sent His Son to reconcile those who would believe in Him unto Himself. He sent His Son to redeem His purpose – His image and authority in the earth. He cares for us so much, that He says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

God sees your (and my) betrayal and loves us through it. He doesn’t turn a blind eye like it never happened. No, He says, like the Doctor did, “You betrayed Me. You betrayed My trust, you betrayed our friendship, you betrayed everything that I’ve ever stood for. You let Me down!” Then He follows that up with, “Do you think I care so little for you that betraying Me would make a difference?”

Dear reader, God cares so much for you that betraying Him doesn’t make a difference. He offers reconciliation. He offers redemption. Then He offers the One Life that never betrays Him by which for you to live: His own. He cares so much about you that He offers you His own life to live by. How cool is that?? I’d say He cares way more than we could ever imagine. And that’s a lot. 🙂

Can you see Christ in any other ways in either of the two video clips?
